MODULAR METAL CEILING SYSTEM

PART 1 — GENERAL

1.01 RELATED DOCUMENTS

A. Drawings and general provisions of Contract including General and Supplementary Conditions.

1.02 SUMMARY

A. This section describes the requirements for providing the suspended metal ceiling systems as indicated on the drawings and specified, to include:

1. Modular metal ceiling panels

2. Modular suspension assemblies

3. (Optional) Perforations

4. (Optional) Sound absorbing materials

5. Accessories; provide all other necessary items including devices for attachments to overhead construction, secondary members, splines, splices, connecting clips, wall connectors, wall trims and all other devices required for a complete installation.

6. Coordinate items penetrating or being integrated into ceiling systems with responsible trades.

1.03 Quality Assurance

A. Reference Standards:

1. American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM):

a. C635 Specifications for Metal Suspension for Acoustical Tile and Lay-In Panel Ceiling.

b. C636 Practice for Installation of Metal Ceiling Suspension Systems for Acoustical Tile and Lay-In Panels.

2. Local Building Code, current edition requirements.

1.04 Submittals

A. Comply with the requirements of Division 1, Section 01300, Submittals.

B. Product Data: Submit manufacturer’s product descriptions and specifications for metal ceiling system.

C. Samples: Submit full size ceiling panel minimum of 12” long showing straight edge detail with an attached suspension system and perimeter trim member in the specified finish.

D. (Optional) Mock-up: Submit a full size production quality ceiling panel for an area of 10’ x 10’. Mock-up shall include all required accessories for a complete installation, including suspension and trims.

E. Shop Drawings:

1. Provide properly dimensioned shop drawings showing ceiling layout. Show all locations, markings, quantities, materials, sizes and shapes and indicate all methods of connecting, anchoring, fastening, bracing and attaching to work of other trades. Shop drawing submittals to be on computer aided design systems and furnished on computer disks. System shall be compatible with that of the architect.

PART 2 — PRODUCTS

2.01 MATERIALS

A. Project design is based on materials and systems of Ceilings Plus, Los Angeles, CA 800-822-3411, www.ceilingsplus.com

Other manufacturers must be approved prior to the bid in written form, by the architect. Specified manufacturer's standard of quality and manufacturing tolerances shall be criteria for evaluating “equivalent” product.

2.02 TRIANGULAR METAL CEILING PANELS

A. Triangular Metal Panels “TRILUSIONS” by Ceilings Plus

1. Ceiling panels shall be formed in adequate thickness and factory formed to specified dimensions.

2. Finish to match architect’s sample. Finish to be selected from manufacturer’s standard color charts unless otherwise specified.

3. The ceiling panels are to be die formed from a single sheet and formed with a minimum 1½” integral return edge on all panel sides. No indentations, marks or defacing of the exposed surface of the metal ceiling panel will be allowed.

4. Each panel to span the dimension of the panel shown on the architectural drawings without objectionable deflection. The plenum shall be 100% accessible. Every panel must be removable. Progressive panel access is not acceptable. Each panel shall be firmly secured to underside of supporting grid by means of three factory installed torsion springs. Torsion spring hinge mechanism shall be designed as to allow each full size ceiling panel to be hinged downward 90 degrees on two springs for access without total removal and without damage to ceiling panel or hinge assembly.

5. (Optional) Perforations per architect selection. Panels to have a solid margin, non perforated, on all sides.

6. No fasteners of any kind shall be visible on exposed face surfaces of ceiling panels or support tees. Down light openings and sprinkler holes shall be factory precision cut as required.

7. (Optional) Sound absorbing material to be a gray, black or white, non-woven fabric with Class 1 fire rating. Perforated panels with absorbing material to achieve an N.R.C. of .70-.80 minimum.

2.03 SUPPORTING GRID

A. Supporting grid system shall consist of straight, factory formed tee in adequate thickness, to support loads. Finish tee to match modular ceiling panels where exposed. Tee shall be factory slotted to accept torsion spring attachment.

B. Main runners shall be spaced to span the dimension of the panel shown on the architectural drawings. Cross runners shall be spaced per the dimension of the panel on the architectural drawing to provide a modular or rectangular pattern. Cross runners shall intersect at 90 degree angles.

2. Ceiling suspension shall meet structural requirements as required in ASTM 635, ASTM 636, heavy duty direct hung ceilings.

C. Hanger attachments shall be 12 ga. pre-straightened steel wires, rods or other approved hanging device that will support required loads.

D. Tolerances: Maximum deviation of ceiling panels from edge to edge in width shall not exceed 1/8” in 10’ when measured with a straightedge placed at any directional location on the finished surfaces. Maximum deviation shall not exceed 1/4” from level in any area or room.

New York City only:

Suspension shall use 1-1/2" heavy duty fire rated tee, #MEA 92-93-M, approved to carry up to 4 lbs. per square foot.

Hanger rods that attach to mains shall be spaced a maximum of 4’ on center. Main runners shall attach to channels that are in compliance with RS 5-16 with thread rods and clips.

PART 3 — EXECUTION

3.01 INSPECTION

A. General Installation:

1. Materials shall be installed in strict accordance with procedures recommended by the manufacturer and requirements of agencies having jurisdiction. All materials for this section shall be from a single source ceiling manufacturer with minimum 5 years experience with products of the nature specified.

2. Attach supporting channels of adequate strength to construction above by approved connection method according to local building codes.

3. The contractor responsible for the work of this section shall be qualified and experienced in the performance of this work and done so for no less than a period of 5 years.

B. Product Handling

1. Delivery: Deliver metal ceiling components to job site in unopened containers identified with product manufacturer’s name, trade name and other applicable identification.

2. Storage: Store all ceiling materials in dry and protected locations until installation.

3. Remove protective film material from panels only when space is completely clean and dust free of airborne particles. Cotton white gloves shall be used for final installation.

4. Remove and replace units that have been damaged or cannot be satisfactorily cleaned to the owner's or architect's acceptance, at no additional cost to the owner. To clean materials follow manufacturer's written cleaning procedures.

C. Maintenance

1. Maintenance instructions, as written by the manufacturer, are to be left with the building owner.
